Samsung Gear S2 Review

Samsung Gear S2 Smartwatch

Powered by Tizen OS, the Samsung Gear S2 does not fail to allure the audience with its performance!

It was and still remains popular amongst smartwatch aficionados, all credits to its innovative built.

Compatible with iOS as well as Android smartphones, S2 alerts the wearer whenever there are texts, news updates, calendar notifications, etc. on their phone.

There’s also a Classic version of S2, which looks quite traditional with black leather strap and chunky bezel. But for now, we will talk about standard Gear S2.

Let’s dive in into its detailed review:

Design

What sets the Gear S2 apart is its innovative rotating bezel design. Users can easily navigate across fitness tracking, time, notifications, music, weather, etc. all with just a quick twist action.

Samsung Gear S2 features a sleek round dial and high-quality screen. The casing is made out of premium stainless steel, which obviously means it is built to last. And the provided strap is of rubber material.

The futuristic design of S2 strikes a perfect balance between innovative features and traditional wristwatch look. It’s just beautiful in every which way.

Display

The 1.2 inches touchscreen features excellent sharpness, clarity and vivid colors with a high resolution of 360 x 360 pixels. Due to a smaller screen, the S2 gives a pixel density of 302 ppi, which is quite good for a smartwatch. It gets fairly bright, even under sunlight.

sAMOLED (Super AMOLED) screen is what causes it to reflect one-fifth sunlight as compared to regular AMOLED displays.

With “always on” feature, your Gear S2’s screen will dim after few seconds of no activity, but it will remain awake and show time in a decreased interface.

With just 47g weight, it can be termed as one the lightest smartwatches out there. This wearable is slim, sleek and feels quite unobstructed on your wrist.

On the side, you’ll see “Home” and “Back” buttons. BACK button allows you to go back in apps, and HOME will return to the time or pop up all the apps. If held longer, it will turn the watch off as well.

Performance

Gear S2 is powered by Samsung’s very own Dual-Core Exynos 3250 chipset, running smoothly at 1 GHz. It features Bluetooth 4.1, 4GB of storage (1.9 GB is accessible), 512 MB RAM, NFC and is based on 28nm process.

As for performance, S2 is packed with intuitive sensors viz. Accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer and optical heart-rate sensor!

The unique water-resistant exterior of S2 is IP68 rated and can withstand accidental spills, rain, and 3.2ft. water submersion for up to 30 minutes.

To receive smart notifications, you need to sync the smartwatch with your phone via Bluetooth.

A snug fit will allow the smartwatch to monitor your heart rate as well.

Best thing is that Samsung provides hundreds of circular watch faces to suit the design. For full customization, access them via Samsung Gear app.

User Interface

Unique “S Voice” feature allows you to reply to texts using your voice commands, though you can do it by “glide typing” or normal typing as well.

S2 comes pre-installed with few Tizen stock apps such as S Health, Nike+, weather app, calendar app and so on.

Apart from this, the Gear store is packed with interesting games and apps that control your smartphone. Like, camera app and music app lets you control main Camera and Music apps on your smartphone.

With S Health, this Distance & accelerometer-enabled watch can smartly track your daily step counts, sleeping patterns and monitor heart rate.

Gear S2 doesn’t have a speaker, so making or taking phone calls through the watch will require your smartphone nearby to speak. Also, to hear music on S2, you’ll need Level U Bluetooth headphones.

To be able to speak on the wearable itself, you need to opt for a 3G version of Gear S2 and buy an eSIM. You can leave your phone back home and still take calls on the 3G version of Gear S2 when outdoors.

Coming back to the point, Samsung Gear S2 in an amazing entry-level smartwatch for those who want few basic features without extra bells and whistles!

Battery

S2 comes with a 250 mAh battery, and it claims to provide 3 days and 2 nights of battery life. It comes with its own Wireless charging dock.

Samsung S3 Frontier Review

Samsung Gear S3 Frontier Smartwatch

Samsung introduced the Gear S3 Frontier model in 2016, which is all about being stylish, chunky and innovative in all aspects.

Rugged look, advanced features, and bold performance are its major highlights!

As opposed to lightweight S2, the S3 Frontier might feel heavy with 63g weight. But the weight is justified as an LTE antenna is integrated into it, so you don’t need to carry your smartphone outdoors every time.

Design

If you press Home Button three times, your pre-determined emergency contacts will be notified with your location.

Same as S2, S3 Frontier is also IP68 rated, so it is fairly resistant to dust and water.

Stainless steel case on S3 is mesmerizing, whereas its leather strap replaces the rubber strap in S2. However, it uses the same standard 22 mm pin as that in S2.

S3 protects its touchscreen with Corning’s Gorilla Glass SR+, and the MIL-SPEC-810G rating strengthens it to bear 5 feet of drops.

One of the few updates in S3 is that now you can answer or reject calls by rotating the bezel itself.

Display

The Frontier has 1.3” superAMOLED touchscreen display, which is only an inch larger than Gear S2, but yet makes a huge difference.

It has similar 360 x 360 resolution, 16M color depth, and 278 ppi density.

Chunky twistable bezel lets you browse through apps, answer/reject calls, scroll through emails, adjust brightness levels and so much more. Significantly, it performs better than S2.

It's “Always On” feature is what makes it a true watch. Choose between 15 preloaded watch faces to change how your Frontier looks, or go to the Gear app to browse more.

Performance

S3 Frontier is integrated with same Dual Core Processor as S2 and runs at 1 GHz.

Moreover, it offers 0.75 GB RAM and 4GB ROM.

S Health app can track your steps, monitor heart rate and even record flights of stairs you climb.

Now let’s talk about what’s new in Samsung S3 Frontier, found absent in S2.

S3 functions more like a smartphone as users can answer calls on the wearable itself, thanks to the built-in speaker.

Built-in GPS tracks your location and lets you access Maps so that you won’t get lost while running errands. S3 Frontier can also take screenshots and has better typing abilities than S2.

Just like S2, S3 Frontier also runs on Samsung’s Tizen OS.

New LTE on S3 Frontier allows you to make calls, receive weather updates, reply to emails/text, etc. on wearable, all while leaving your smartphone at home. That’s only when similar apps are available for the watch also.

Likewise, the most distinctive feature made available in Gear S3 Frontier is the Samsung Pay.

New MST technology allows you to pay at almost all payment terminals. All you need to do is register your card in Gear app via smartphone. Once done, just press and hold the “Back” button for a while, select “Pay” option and hold your S3 Frontier close to the payment terminal. And, you’re done!

Battery

It has a larger 380 mAh battery than Gear S2, but the battery life is almost similar which is three days and two nights. Keep in mind that GPS might drain the battery quickly.

The package comes included with a Wireless charging dock. Simply place your S3 on it, and it will start charging.

Final Word

Samsung has delighted tech lovers by launching an array of smartwatches featuring innovative designs.

Samsung Gear S2 and S3 Frontier are two of its most popular models present in the market, which continue to give tough a fight to its competitors.

Now comes the real question.

Samsung Gear S2 vs. S3 Frontier- Which is best?

We think that S3 Frontier is certainly faster, feature-packed and advanced than S2, as it offers more.

For the most part, both share same features, but better bezel, LTE, Samsung Pay, built-in GPS, and speaker make S3 Frontier the best wearable out of two.

Apart from this, it has an outdoorsy look and sleek black finish. Thus, it wins the game regarding aesthetics.
