That is why in this article we decided to compare the more serious action cameras, providing you with all their specifications, making your decision easier than ever.

Some of the action cameras can be costly which is why you have to think about your purchase just because you have to live with your camera after that.  At first glance, many of the cameras offer similar functions such as 4K resolution, stabilization, waterproofing, etc.  Even action cameras that cost $50 can offer similar specifications to the GoPro, but they certainly won’t deliver the same quality.

In this article, we will find out what specifications are important when buying an action camera, what to look out for, and find out which is best:  GoPro Hero 7 Black or GoPro Fusion.

Even though both cameras could be used for similar scenarios, they are very different and each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

GoPro Hero 7 Black vs GoPro Fusion: Design

GoPro HERO 7 Black

Their overall design is different just because they were built for two different things. The GoPro Hero 7 Black is similar to its predecessor, Hero 6, with a regular action camera design, whereas the GoPro fusion has a more unusual boxy design, designed for 360- degree spherical recording.  It is bigger than the Hero 7 Black and contains two lenses in the front and in the back, and is almost twice as heavy, weighing 220g.

Physical dimensions:

GoPro Hero 7 Black: 6.5 x 4.5 x 3.5 cm 118g

GoPro Fusion: 8.9 x 7.6 x 2.5 cm 220g

The screen on the GoPro Hero 7 Black is bigger, measuring 2”, and it also includes a touchscreen.  It is very easy to use, navigating by swiping your fingers.

GoPro Fusion has a standard non-touchscreen, 1” no color LCD display, which isn’t a bad thing since this camera is for capturing every angle so it needs the space for the lens and you can’t have a clear view of the whole picture on the small screen.  However, using GoPro’s smartphone app, you can feed the picture directly to your phone which enables you to have a clear idea of what you are doing.

Since the GoPro Fusion is not like a regular action camera, it has lower water-resistance reaching a  maximum 4.8 meters submerged in water, compared to the GoPro Hero 7 Black which has no problem conquering 10 meters.

GoPro Hero 7 Black vs GoPro Fusion: Lenses and Perspective

This is where these two cameras have their differences.  GoPro Hero 7 Black is more like a regular action camera and has to be pointed at whatever you want to record.  It has a wide-angle lens with a  diagonal field of view of 149 degrees to 49.8 degrees when you zoom.

However, the GoPro Fusion captures everything around it providing footage and audio that you can use for everything such as VR goggles.  It has a 360-degree viewing angle where you can crop out sections in order to turn it into a regular flat video.  It is claimed to be the best 360-degree camera on the market.

GoPro Hero 7 Black vs GoPro Fusion: Image Resolution

GoPro Hero 7 Black is a fairly advanced action camera offering state of the art technology such as recording resolutions from 720p up to 4K.  It also has stable frame rates that can go up to 240fps at 1080p and 60fps at 4K offering outstanding slow-motion videos.

The GoPro Fusion, on the other hand, has two options which you can select: 5.2K (5228x2624) at 30fps or 3K (3000x1504) at 60 fps.  Both these options offer spherical video output with a 360-degree view.  However, you can crop rectangular sections at 1080p or 720p using the Overcapture feature on the GoPro smartphone app.

GoPro Hero 7 Black vs GoPro Fusion: Performance

GoPro Hero 7 Black has some serious updates from its predecessor with it’s tweaked GP1 processor. The camera offers different features such as, state of the art Hypersmooth 3-axis stabilization, capable of creating incredibly smooth videos even when you have a lot of camera movement.  This even works underwater and while making time-lapse videos.

The GoPro Fusion, on the other hand, uses Abrella-branded chips something similar to older GoPro models.  Since this is not a regular action camera it requires additional steps, such as rendering the individual recorded 180-degree video clips into a final 360-degree format.  This can take several minutes even on a very powerful computer.

While they both have similar and comparable performance specifications, in real-life they are very different and designed for opposite things.

GoPro Hero 7 Black vs GoPro Fusion: Audio

Since the GoPro Hero 7 Black is built for more casual and everyday recording it contains 3 microphones producing stereo sound to your videos.  However, the GoPro Fusion has features like ‘spatial audio’ designed to use the available 4 microphones, three placed on the top and one on the front, to create surround sound immersed from all sides.

This technology is very good when you are using your footage in the VR technology, and it helps you capture the moment even more.

GoPro Hero 7 Black vs GoPro Fusion: Memory Cards and Storage

GoPro Fusion

GoPro Hero 7 Black comes with a standard single Micro SD memory card slot and it can work with any Micro SD card.  However, if you want to record in the highest quality setting, you will be better off buying a Micro SD card with a write speed of up to 80Mbit/sec or more, to avoid any unnecessary glitches.

Just because of the complicated video recording system and the high resolution, the footage of this camera can use a lot of space. That is why the GoPro Fusion comes with two Micro SD card slots, one for each of the two internal camera modules.  The good thing is that the video output from both memory cards is being fused together automatically, so you do not have to do anything, but if you are going to use a card reader to browse your videos on a PC, you will have to match both videos manually into some software application.

GoPro Hero 7 Black vs GoPro Fusion: Battery Life

Even though they have different batteries, they both have about the same recording time at the highest quality which is about 70 minutes.  If you are using 4K on the Hero 7 Black and 5.2K 360-degree video on the Fusion, the battery will be consumed faster.

You can get the most out of the battery by recording in lower quality modes such as 720p or 1080p, and then your battery on the Hero 7 Black can go on for up to 110 minutes.

The same story with the Fusion, if you go down to 3K resolution you can expand your battery life up to 80 minutes.

Battery Specifications:

GoPro Hero 7 Black: 1220 mAh, 4.4V (5.37Wh)

GoPro Fusion: 2620mAh, 3.8V (9.95Wh)

GoPro Hero 7 Black vs GoPro Fusion: Accessories and Mounting

Both cameras have standard GoPro multi-accessory mounts, but the Fusion since it is a 360-degree camera, does not support drone mounts.  The Go Pro Hero 7 has a wide range of accessories that can be used as in any GoPro camera, but on the other hand, the Fusion is a bit restricted just because of its viewing angle.  So, it is best to use mounts that won’t interfere with the video output and keep your fingers under the device.

GoPro Hero 7 Black vs GoPro Fusion: What do you get in the box?

The packaging is also very important, especially when all the accessories can cost you a lot of money. As expected, the more expensive camera has a few more things included in the package.

The Hero 7 Black is attached to a small stand and is bundled with a pair of sticky mounts that can be used on a curved or flat surface and that is about it.  As standard, you will receive a quick start guide, a USB-C cable, and a battery.

Since the GoPro Fusion is more expensive you get a few more accessories.  This camera comes with a tripod/selfie stick, carrying case, a few mounts for curved and flat surfaces, battery, thumb screw, USB-C, and a quick start guide.

This is not that bad for the Hero 7 Black since you know that your money goes into the camera and not some accessories that you will not use.

GoPro Hero 7 Black vs GoPro Fusion: Price

We touched on this in the previous paragraph and since the GoPro Fusion is the most versatile and advanced action camera ever, it’s expected to be the most expensive one.  This camera is selling for $599.99 which is a lot of money.  In recent times we’ve seen that GoPro has had a special promotion price of $299.99.  This could mean that maybe they are not selling many of these cameras since the price is very high or they are building a replacement.

GoPro Hero 7 Black has a more reasonable price of $399.99, which is also expensive but is more value for money.

GoPro Hero 7 Black vs GoPro Fusion: Verdict

Both of them are entirely different cameras. The GoPro Hero 7 Black is designed for everyday usage and has more very useful features, whereas on the other hand, GoPro Fusion is an entirely different new concept for GoPro. Its spherical 360-degree view obviously has its own advantages but it is more strict and limited and you will have trouble fitting this camera in everyday life.

Yes, it has the ‘overcapture’ feature, allowing you to use a regular camera, but all that seems too complicated and you will probably be better off buying the GoPro Hero 7 Black.  The Fusion may   make more sense in the future, when the VR technology is part of our everyday lives.

The trouble is that the Fusion is always capturing a 360-degree view and you have to decide what part to keep in order to use it as a regular camera.  If you are running a video business, maybe the Fusion will make sense to you, since you can create promotional 360-degree videos.  The Hero 7 Black is an amazing action camera with unbelievable features and inbuilt quality and it is able to capture extraordinary footage that will blow your mind.

For now, you will still be better off choosing the more reasonable GoPro Hero 7 Black without regretting your decision, and who knows what the future will bring next.
